áááááJohn Roach was born in Oriskany falls, NY, and Married Anna Reynolds of Hecla (Westmoreland), NY in Clinton in 1892. After their marriage John and Anna first resided in Camden but by 1900 they are residing in Utica where John is found in partners with Patrick Reardon in the Roach and Reardon Hotel at 67 John St. Also known as the Oneida Hotel, the Roach & Reardon Hotel is listed at 67 John St. between 1900 and 1914 when it is then listed as 425 John St. and continued there until 1918, the year before prohibition. As the city was in the process of changing their street numbering process, the change in address does not necessarily indicate that they moved locations. The Hotel was located about one block North, and on the opposite side of the street of Old St. John's Church.
áááááFrom 1900 through 1906 the family is listed as residing at the same address as the hotel. In 1907 Their residence is listed as 66 Second St. and in 1914 as 704 Second St. Again, this may not indicate an actual move to another residence. By 1925 they owned their home at at 110 Grove Pl. where John is listed as an inspector for the city of Utica. John and Anna resided at their Grove Pl. residence until their death when the home was willed to John's son, Bart, and his daughter, Mary Bankert. The home was eventually bought by Mary (Roach) Bankert's son Norb Bankert Jr. who resided there until 1967.

áááááEli is significant in our ancestry. Our ancestors were among the first to settle in Massachusetts in 1630, and they were the first settlers of Connecticut in 1635. As early settlers our grandfathers gained title to thousands of acres of land in Massachusetts and Connecticut and they owned large tracts of property now occupied in part by Harvard College, South Boston, Springfield, Windsor, and downtown Hartford. As each new generation was born, the original land was divided among the children. Eli Winchell Jr. represents the last of our New England ancestors to own land in New England and it is with Eli that our once vast New England land legacy would end.
áááááAbout 1631 Eli married Wealthy Gillett in Southwick, Massachusetts. In 1836 Eli bought two parcels of land consisting of 50 acres and 11 acres of his in-laws, Rodolphus and Thede (Dewey) Gillett. This 50 acre parcel was located in both Southwick Massachusetts and Granby Connecticut. Eli mortgaged this land through the town of Southwick in the amount of $600. Rodolphus and his brother Heman had originally bought the fifty acres in 1814. In 1828 this parcel is shown on a tax list as consisting of a home lot consisting of a house, a barn, a shop, 4 acres mowing, 10 acres ploughed, 8 acres pasture and 8 acres of woodland. Eli and Wealthy raised their daughter and son on this land and farmed tobacco, still today a major crop in the area.
áááááIn 1856 Eli made his will and provided for his wife Wealthy, one cow and the use of half the whole estate for her natural life, to daughter Sarah the sum of $100, and to son Clydon Rodolphus, the residue of the estate. When Eli died of gall stones eleven years later in August of 1867, the estate was inventoried at $269 in personal property and $850 in land for a total of $1,110. Three months later Wealthy "is in very feeble health, is very destitute of necessary clothing. . ." and appeals to the court for release of some parts of the estate. It is unlikely that Wealthy received much, if any aid, as two years later, in June of 1869, Joseph Rockwell as administrator lists debts due from the estate in the amount of $746. By the time the estate was settled, there would be little, if any, monetary help for the widow.
áááááThree years after the death of her husband, Wealthy, now 56, was residing in East Granby Connecticut with her son Clydon, his wife Louisa, and his three children, Letta, Frederick, and Clarence. The next year, In December of 1871, Clydon would lose his wife and daughter. The following year, in 1872, Wealthy moved to Utica New York with her daughter Sarah Messenger, and her grandson Irving. What brought them to Utica is unknown and I have not found any near relations that may have influenced them. Five years earlier Wealthy had a husband and a farm and her children were raising families. By 1872 she had lost her husband and farm, her daughter was now separated from her husband and her son had lost his wife and daughter. Maybe it was just time for a change of scenery.
Wealthy and Sarah were renters in Utica and worked as seamstresses and cigar makers. When Irving Messenger married Bridget Gagan about 1885, his mother Sarah, and grandmother Wealthy, lived with him and his family. Wealthy outlived her husband Eli by 37 years and lived long enough to see her oldest great grandchild reach the age of 18. She died in Utica in 1904 at the age of 90, of "a lingering illness", and was buried in New Forest Cemetery. Her obituary states "Mrs. Winchell was a member of the Baptist faith and possessed many lovable qualities".
áááááClydon Winchell, son of Eli and Wealthy (Gillett) Winchell, died in Granville Massachusetts in 1908, leaving one son, Clarence, with no mention of his son Frederick who is mentioned in Wealthy's obituary in 1904. His wife and daughter had died in 1871. His estate consisted of an old house and shed on 4 acres of land and a pile of boards with a total value of $129.00. When his son Clarence died in 1927, Clarence had $2.00 and a check from the town of Granville for $200.00. After expenses his estate totaled $55.00 to be divided amongst his cousins Herbert Winchell of Springfield, Ella Clap of Granville, and Mary E. Clark of Windsor. His Utica New York cousins, Mary, Clarence, Margeurite, Mabel, and Loretta Messenger apparently missed out on this legacy.
áááááSarah Messenger, daughter of Eli and Wealthy (Gillett) Winchell, died in Utica at the home of her daughter, Mary (Messenger) Lange, in 1921 at the age of 88, leaving nine great grandchildren. Her husband, Frank Messenger, had died in Granby Connecticut in 1889, though they had gone their separate ways many years earlier. Sarah was buried from Calvary Episcopal Church in Forest Hills Cemetery.

áááááRensselaer Messenger, more commonly called Frank Messenger, was born in Granby about 1824. In 1850, working as a tailor, Rensselaer is living with his brother in Granby. In 1855, at about the age of 31, he marries Sara Ann Winchell in nearby Southwick, Massachusetts. While this is the first marriage for 21 year old Sarah, the marriage record shows this to be his second marriage. Who his first wife was, or why the marriage ended, is unknown.
áááááTen months after the marriage, their son, Willis Irving, is born in Granby. By 1860 the family is living with Sarah's parents in Southwick, Massachusetts, probably on her fathers property. "R. F." is still working as a tailor.
áááááSarah's father died in 1867 and his small farm was gone when the estate was settled. In 1870, Sarah's mother is living in East Granby, Connecticut with her son, Clydon. I have not located Frank and Sarah in 1870, but they were probably living in the Granby area.
áááááAt some point between 1860 and 1870, Frank and Sarah went their separate ways. I have found no further record of Frank until his death in 1889 when he was buried in West Granby Cemetery. He probably left no estate as the record shows that he was buried by the town. The death record indicates that he was "single", however, I don't believe that he and Sarah were officially divorced, even though they had gone their separate ways at least twenty years earlier. Census and City Directory records for Sarah list her as "married" up until about 1890 and subsequent records list her as a widow.
áááááAbout 1872, Sarah, now in her late thirties, along with her widowed mother, nearing 60, and her teenage son Irving, moved to Utica New York. What brought them to Utica from the home where their ancestors had lived for nearly 250 years is unknown. I have not been able to find any near relatives nor any records to indicate the purpose of their move. In Utica, Sarah and her mother were always renters, and worked at various jobs including tailoress, housekeeping, and cigar makers.
áááááIrving married about 1884 and Sarah and Wealthy lived with him while he raised his young family. The 1900 census ranks as one of my most valuable research prizes as it shows four generations of our family that would encompass nearly one hundred and thirty years, from 1813, the birth of Wealthy (Gillett) Winchell, to 1940, the death of Mary (Messenger) Lange. All living in the same household at 446 Seymour Ave in Utica.9
áááááSarah's son Irving died in 1899, and her mother Wealthy died in 1904, at the age of 90. Sarah lived another seventeen years and died in 1921 at the age of 87, at the home of her granddaughter, Mary (Messenger) Lange at 608 Emily St., Utica.
