áááááJohn Bancroft was born probably in Swarkeston, Derbyshire, England. He was the son of Thomas Bancroft and Rebecca (__?__). He married Anne (__?__). He died before 12 May 1635 in Kings Newton, Derbyshire, England.
ááááá

áááááJohn Bancroft sold his holdings in Swarkeston in preparation for emigration to New England but died in 1635 before he could make the trip. His widow, Anne, came to New England, possibly with Nathaniel Sowther who was a witness to John's will and overseer of his estate. She moved with her family from Massachusetts to Southampton, Long Island. Her children, John, Thomas, and Anna, later moved to the Connecticut Valley.

John's younger brother, Thomas, a poet and author in England, wrote of his brother:

You sold your land the lighter hence to go
To foreign coasts, yet (Fate would have it so)
Did ne'er New England reach. but went with them
That journey toward New Jerusalem.

Immigration: before 1639, When he is found in Windsor.
Founder/Proprietor: Windsor by 1639.

áááááJohn Drake of Windsor has been confused with the John Drake who came to New England in 1630. The earlier John Drake disappears from the records and may have died soon after his arrival or returned to England as there are no records in New England of a John Drake between 1630 and 1639 when our John is found in Windsor, CT.
áááááJohn, the emigrant; came to W. before 1639. "Aug. 17, 1659, John Drake, Sr, dyed accidentally as he was driving a cart loaded with corn to carry from his house to his son Jacob's; the cattle being 2 oxen, and his mare. In the highway, against John Griffin's, some thing scared the cattle, and they set a running, and he laboring to stop them by taking hold on the mare, was thrown down on his face, and the cart-wheel went over him, brake one of his legs, and bruised his bodye so that be was taken up dead, being carried to his daughter's house, had life come again, but dyed in a short time, and was buried on the 18th of August, 1659." Will settling est. bef. Prob. Court (II.125). -W. Rec. For his land grant At W., see p.154, Vol. I.
áááááThe "Old Widow Drake" was adm. a memb. of W. ch., 23 Feb., 1639 (O.C.R.), and d. 7 Oct., 1681, "at 100th year of age, having lived a widow 22 years."- O. C. R.

áááááIn 1651, John Drake served on a jury at a court held in Hartford in December of 1651 concerning the death of Henry Stiles. Henry died during a militia training exercise in October of 1651 by the accidental discharge of the gun of Thomas Allyn. Thomas Allyn confessed and the decision of whether the conviction would "bee man-slaughter, or Homoside by misadventure" was taken up by the jury. The jury judged it to be Homicide by misadventure and Thomas Allyn was fined £20 and ordered that he shall be bound to his good behavior for twelve months and that he could not bear arms for the same amount of time.
áááááThe fact that Henry Stiles had died in an event involving two honorable men begged for an explanation, for there was no apparent reason why the Lord would let such a thing happen. The answer, of course, was witchcraft.
áááááBefore his death, Henry Stiles, a bachelor, was boarding at the house of Thomas Gilbert. Nearly two and a half years after the death of Henry Stiles, an attempt was made to fasten the blame of this accidental death upon witchcraft, and the following indictment was presented against one Lydia Gilbert, who was probably a member of the family of Thomas Gilbert, of Windsor.
"Lydia Gilburt, thou are herein indited by the name of Lydia Gilburt. that, not having the feare of God before thine eyes, thou hast of late years, or still dost give Entertainment to Sathat[an], the great Enemy of God, and mankinde, and by his helpe hast killed the body of Henry Stiles, besides other witchcraft, for which, according to the law of God, and the Established law of this Commonwealth, thou deservest to dye."4 "Ye party above mentioned is found guilty of witchcraft by ye Jury."
Our ancestors, in their holiness, had solved the mystery of the death of Henry Stiles.
