     Michael Baker was born circa 1896 (in the vicinity of) in Damascus, Syria. He died in January 1989.

     Clydon Rodolphus Winchell was born in 1837. He was the son of Eli Winchell Jr. and Wealthy Permelia Gillett. He married Louisa Winchell (his cousin), daughter of Alexander Winchell and Lois Drake, circa 1858 in East Granville, Mass..¹ He died on 14 July 1908 in Granville, Hampden Co., Mass..

     Louisa Winchell was born in 1838. She was the daughter of Alexander Winchell and Lois Drake. She married Clydon Rodolphus Winchell, son of Eli Winchell Jr. and Wealthy Permelia Gillett, circa 1858 in East Granville, Mass..¹ She died in December 1871 in Granville, Hampden Co., Mass., at age 33 years.

     Letta Winchell was born in 1858 in Southwick, Hampden Co., Mass.. She was the daughter of Clydon Rodolphus Winchell and Louisa Winchell. She died on 15 December 1871 in Granville, Hampden Co., Mass., at age 13 years.

     Clarence L. Winchell was born in 1865 in Mass.. He was the son of Clydon Rodolphus Winchell and Louisa Winchell. He died on 23 June 1927 in Granville, Hampden Co., Mass., at age 62 years.

     Frederick Winchell was born in 1867. He was the son of Clydon Rodolphus Winchell and Louisa Winchell. He died after 1904.

     Eli Winchell was born on 20 May 1767 in Turkey Hills, now, East Granby, Hartford Co., Conn..¹ He was the son of Lieut. Elisha Winchell and Mary Thrall. He married, at age 23, Abigail Phelps on 27 December 1790 (I believe she may be dau. of Alexander Phelps and Abigail Winchell but I have no proof).¹ He died on 7 April 1859 in East Granville, Mass., at age 91.^2,1

     Born and raised in Turkey Hills, Eli married Abigail Phelps in 1790. The Winchell Genealogy shows a marriage date of 27 December, 1791 but I have not found a source. Eli and Abigail farmed in Turkey Hills and the first six of their eight children were born there. Some are recorded as baptized in the Congregational Church at Turkey Hills. Eli continued to acquire land in Turkey Hills through 1803, and was often involved in transactions with his brother Elisha.
     In October of 1803, Eli started selling his holdings in Turkey Hills as he prepared to move his family about ten miles north to Granville, Massachusetts. In February of 1804, Eli is called of Granby when he sells 21 acres to Josiah Hickocks. In May of the same year Eli is called of "Granby, Hampshire Co., Massachusetts" when he sells his last parcel in Turkey Hills to his cousin Worthy Thrall. I might suspect that Granby Massachusetts is a mistake, however, the land record clearly states it as Granby, Hampshire Co. Subsequent records of Eli and his family are found in Granville, Massachusetts, and his last two children were born there in 1808 and 1810. In 1805 he bought a farm on the southwest part of East Granville and he lived there until 1842 when he moved to the northwest part of town to live with his son Luke. Eli was a farmer, but we also find that in 1814 he is on a "List of Tavern Keepers having regular Innholders licenses."
     Abigail died in Granville in 1845 at the age of 76. Eli lived another fourteen years and died in 1859 at the age of 91. Eli's family was prominent in Granville and today we find a Winchell Mountain, Winchell Road, and Winchell Reservoir within the town.
     The parents of Abigail Phelps have eluded me, however, without any proof, I believe she is the daughter of Alexander Phelps (c.1735- ), who was a son of Ensign Samuel Phelps (1691-1753) whose first wife was Rachel Owen (1692- ), and Abigail Winchell (1747-1773) who was a daughter of Ensign Martin Winchell (1708-1785) and his second wife Lucy (___) (1714-1785).
     Alexander Phelps married Abigail Winchell probably about 1768 and they had two daughters before Abigail's death in 1773 at the age of 25. Their daughters, named in the will of their grandmother Lucy (___) Winchell, were Abigail and Sarah Phelps. I believe it is likely that this Abigail is the same who married Eli Winchell in 1790, and that her sister could be the Sarah Phelps who married Eli's cousin, Worthy Thrall, about 1793. Eli and Worthy seemed to be close. They had their children baptized in the same church on the same days, and Eli's last land sale in Turkey Hills was to Worthy Thrall. If my theory is correct, this last transaction was not only between two cousins, but also from sister to sister.
     Among those who took the oath of freeman in 1799 with Eli was Horace Phelps, who may be the same who witnessed a deed to Eli in 1793 and may be the son of Azariah Phelps, whom I suspect is an uncle to Eli's wife, Abigail Phelps.

     Abigail Phelps was born in 1769 (age at death).^1,2 She married Eli Winchell, age 23, son of Lieut. Elisha Winchell and Mary Thrall, on 27 December 1790.¹ She died on 9 June 1845 in Granville, Hampden Co., Mass., at age 76 of ulcers.^3,2 She was buried in Northeast cemetery (stone).

     Talcott Winchell was born on 31 May 1792 in Turkey Hills, now, East Granby, Hartford Co., Conn.. He was the son of Eli Winchell and Abigail Phelps. He married (1), at age 21, Abbie Spelman, age 16, daughter of Deacon Elijah Spelman and Mary Chapman, on 2 May 1814 in East Granville, Mass.. He married (2), at age 49, Maria T. Taylor, daughter of Wells Taylor, on 22 July 1841 in Suffield, Hartford Co., Conn.. He died on 28 December 1872 in Granville, Hampden Co., Mass., at age 80.

     Alexander Winchell was born on 10 September 1794 in Turkey Hills, now, East Granby, Hartford Co., Conn.. He was the son of Eli Winchell and Abigail Phelps. He died on 9 June 1805 in Southwick, Hampden Co., Mass., at age 10 of fever sores.

     Abigail Winchell was born on 20 January 1797 in Turkey Hills, now, East Granby, Hartford Co., Conn.. She was the daughter of Eli Winchell and Abigail Phelps. She married, at age 22, Homer Griswold, son of Abel Griswold, on 28 September 1819 in East Granville, Mass.. She died on 21 March 1864 in Collinsville, Hartford Co., Conn., at age 67.

     Capt. Luke Winchell was born on 4 April 1799 in Turkey Hills, now, East Granby, Hartford Co., Conn.. He was the son of Eli Winchell and Abigail Phelps. He married (1), at age 27, Persis Miller on 11 September 1826 in Granville, Hampden Co., Mass.. He married (2) Caroline D. Gibbons after 1832 in Granville, Hampden Co., Mass.. He died in 1879 in Missouri at age 79 years.

     Mary Winchell was born on 11 March 1805 in Granville, Hampden Co., Mass.. She was the daughter of Eli Winchell and Abigail Phelps. She married (1), at age 25, Joseph Chandler Clark, age 32, son of Joseph Clark and Jemima Winchell, on 10 October 1830 in East Granville, Mass.. She married (2) Aaron Clark in East Granville, Mass..

     Alexander Winchell was born on 29 May 1808 in East Granville, Mass.. He was the son of Eli Winchell and Abigail Phelps. He married Lois Drake in Southwick, Hampden Co., Mass.. He died on 22 August 1860 in East Granville, Mass., at age 52.

     Norris Winchell was born on 12 June 1810 in East Granville, Mass.. He was the son of Eli Winchell and Abigail Phelps. He died in 1814 in East Granville, Mass., of worms, at age 4.

     Lieut. Elisha Winchell was born on 17 August 1728 in Turkey Hills, now, East Granby, Hartford Co., Conn..¹ He was the son of Lieut. Thomas Winchell and Jemima Owen. He married Mary Thrall, daughter of John Thrall II and Mary Roberts, in East Granby, Hartford Co., Conn..² He died on 12 June 1798 in East Granby, Hartford Co., Conn., at age 69 of cancer.² He was buried in East Granby cemetery (stone).

     Elisha Winchell was born in Turkey Hills, married a local girl, raised his family, and died where he began. He was a farmer and a carpenter working and residing in East Granby. His home was at 58 South Main St. and was standing as late as 1869. In [ ] Elisha was appointed as a temporary tavern keeper for the innaugeration of Reverand Aaron Booge. Elisha died of cancer at the age of 69. Mary survived another 26 years and probably resided with her son Eli who had moved to Granville, Massachusetts about 1805 as she died in Granville in 1824 at the age of 94. At least two children of Elisha and Mary would live into their eighties and another two would live into their nineties.
     In The Records of Connecticut, dated January 1782 we find: "This assembly do establish Elisha Winchell to be Lieutenant of the 2d Company of the Alarm List in the 18th Regiment of the Sate." Muster rolls are very incomplete for the American Revolution and, other than this appointment, I have not found any further service of record, although I have located records for his older and younger brothers. Without further records it is impossible to know where and when he served, however, being commissioned as a Lieutenant would indicate that Elisha's service during the American Revolution was commendable.

From the Winchell Genealogy, p. 104:
     Lieut. Elisha was extensively engaged in business. Apr. 27, 1752. when but 24 years old, he purchased an interest in a grist and saw-mill. Apr. 18,1755, he received from his father, "for love and good will," a farm of 43 acres, valued at 800 pounds. He continued to make purchases till May 29, 1787, when he sold 3 acres to his son Grove. He seems now to have retired from business. His house stood on the west side of the road leading from the village south toward Hartford, and about a mile and a half from the village. It stands close to the street and looks as if built for a country tavern. It is now [1869] renovated and painted white. The old red wood-shed still stands. as also the old barn, on the opposite side of the street. On one of the braces of the latter still remain the words, "Elisha Winchel, 1756.''

"In memory of Lieut. Winchell. he died 12 Jan., A. D. 1798, in the 70 year of his age.

"His virtues would a monument supply,
But underneath this stone his ashes lie."

     Mary Thrall was born on 21 May 1730.¹ She was the daughter of John Thrall II and Mary Roberts. She married Lieut. Elisha Winchell, son of Lieut. Thomas Winchell and Jemima Owen, in Turkey Hills, now, East Granby, Hartford Co., Conn..¹ She died on 2 October 1824 in Granville, Hampden Co., Mass., at age 94.^2,3

     Luke Winchell was the son of Lieut. Elisha Winchell and Mary Thrall. He married Eunice Thrall, daughter of Ezekiel Thrall and Elizabeth MacMoran. He died on 16 July 1826 in Utica, Oneida Co., New York, "Died - On the 16th, Luke Winchell, formerly from Connecticut, on his journey home. Printers at the east will please to insert this notice." (Utica New York Intelligencer, Dated July 18, 1826).

     Grove Winchell was born on 13 December 1761 in Turkey Hills, now, East Granby, Hartford Co., Conn.. He was the son of Lieut. Elisha Winchell and Mary Thrall. He married Grace Moore, daughter of Nahum Moore and Katharine White. He died on 12 July 1846 in Chester, Hampden Co., Mass., at age 84.

     Elisha Winchell was born on 29 June 1757 in Turkey Hills, now, East Granby, Hartford Co., Conn.. He was the son of Lieut. Elisha Winchell and Mary Thrall. He married, at age 19, Mindwell Hurlbut, age 18, daughter of John Hurlbut and Mindwell Alderman, on 21 June 1777. He died on 10 December 1844 in West Springfield, Mass., at age 87.

     Violetta Winchell was born in 1769 in Turkey Hills, now, East Granby, Hartford Co., Conn..¹ She was the daughter of Lieut. Elisha Winchell and Mary Thrall. She married Jesse Forward, son of Capt. Abel Forward and Hannah Phelps, resided in Black River Country, Lewis Co., New York in 1810.

     Jemima Winchell was born in 1771 in Turkey Hills, now, East Granby, Hartford Co., Conn.. She was the daughter of Lieut. Elisha Winchell and Mary Thrall. She married (1) Joseph Clark, son of David Clark and Rachel Moore. She married (2) Deacon Elijah Spelman (as his third wife), son of Aaron Spelman and Elizabeth Rose, after 1824. She died on 29 March 1861 in East Granville, Mass., at age 90 years.
