Cemetery: St. Joseph's cemetery; Stone, N43°06.175', W75°16.184'.

On October 6, 1848, Bartholomew, at age 37, his 35 year old wife Gertrude (also called Catharine), and their five children, Frances, 10, Sebastian, 7, Joseph, 6, Gustave, 4, and Josephine, 2 ½, arrived in New York aboard the ship "Bavaria" mastered by G. Anthony Jr. Their sea journey originated about three weeks earlier when they boarded the "Bavaria" at the port of Havre, France. Bart had been a farmer, probably in Landau, Bavaria, where it is known that his eldest daughter was born.
Soon after their arrival, they took up residence in the vicinity of Utica, New York. In June of 1852, Bart filed a Declaration of Intent to become a citizen in the Oneida County Court. His witnesses were Martin and Enoch Siselmayer, of nearby Rome. In October of 1855, Bart's citizenship was granted when he took his oath and renounced any allegiance to the King of Bavaria.
By 1855 Bart and Gertrude were well established. Josephine, their youngest when they arrived in America, had died sometime between 1848 and 1855. However, they had two more children, John in 1849, and Anna in 1851. Bart was working as a laborer and had managed to buy his own home on Whitesboro St. in West Utica. This area was dominated by Catholic, German speaking immigrants with strong ties to nearby St. Joseph's Church. The family had lived on Whitesboro St. since at least 1853 and their home, at 271 Whitesboro St., was valued at $400 in 1855.
In June of 1858, Bartholomew Hamberger died at the age of 47. Gertrude was left with six children ranging in age from 7 to 20. Two years later, her eldest daughter, Frances, married Rochus Regensburger. In 1862, Gertrude's eldest son, Sebastian, enlisted and spent the next three years with the 146'th New York Volunteers. His unit engaged in nearly every major battle in the Civil War.
In the Utica City Directory for 1861/2, Gertrude is shown still living at 271 Whitesboro St. The 1862/3 directory shows the family on adjoining Saratoga St. By 1865, when her son Sebastian returns from the Civil War, Gertrude and her remaining children were residing in Buffalo. Why she moved to Buffalo is unknown. Her remaining sons were now of working age and the move could have been made for employment, or she may have had family in the Buffalo area.
Gertrude's eldest, Frances, remained in Utica where she raised her family. Her son, Fr. Albert Regensburger, became a priest and was, for a time, stationed at St. Joseph's Parish. Frances (Hamberger) Regensburger died in 1901 at the age of 64. Gertrude's eldest son, Sebastian, a painter, married Mary Meaney and would remain in Utica and raise his seven children. He died in Utica in 1905 at the age of 65. Joseph resided, at least for a while, in Buffalo. He may be the Joseph found on Madison St. between 1868 and 1871, a brewer, with a wife, Catharine, and a son William born in 1867. Joseph had probably died by 1901 as he is not mentioned in his sisters obituary. Gustave, is found in Lancaster, Ohio by 1875. He married Louise Groff, of nearby Somerset, and had five children. Gustave was alive in 1905, and may have lived until 1938. John remained in the Buffalo area where he married Magdalena Nolder and raised five children. He worked as a carpenter and millwright as a young man. He died in 1917 at the age of 68. Anna was living with her mother (called Catharine) at 597 Swan St. in 1870. Whether she married or not is unknown. Anna had died by 1901.
Some interesting information is found in the "History of Fairfield County" (Lancaster, Ohio). The Temperance movement was strong in the Lancaster area and there were many local societies advocating it's benefits. One of the Lancaster orders was the Knights of St. George, organized in Lancaster, Nov. 2, 1875, under Rev. Father Schmidt, as Honorary President. Among the thirty-one constituent members named are Gustave A., Joseph, and John Hamberger. Gustave is undoubtedly the son of Bartholomew and Gertrude Hamberger. Could it be that his brothers, Joseph and John, also resided for a time in Lancaster?
By 1875, and possibly about 1871, Gertrude returned to Utica where she resided with her daughter, Frances. She died in 1876 at the age of 64. Bart and Gertrude are buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery, next to their son-in-law and daughter, Rochus and Frances Regensburger. Bart's stone is broken and laying flat on the ground. Weathering has worn the inscription.
