James Forbes was born circa 1635 in Scotland.1 He married Katharen (__?__).2 He died on 27 November 1692 in Hartford, Hartford Co., Conn..3

Immigration: before 1658, Possibly arrived on the "John and Sara" in 1652 as one of Cromwell's Scotch prisoners.

The arrival date of James in New England is uncertain. The first record of him is contained in the medical journal of John Winthrop which states that James Forbes, a "Scotchman", worked on a farm in 1658 owned by Mr. Goodens. The possibility exists that he was one of the Scotch prisoners captured at the battle of Dunbar, Scotland, in 1650 and transported to New England to be sold as slaves, possibly aboard the "John and Sarah" which arrived in Boston by 13 May, 1652. The attitudes in New England at the time favored indentured servitude as opposed to slavery and the prisoners who were not sent on to Barbados generally served as indentured servants for terms up to eight years. Some say that he is the Captain James Forbes, of Culloden, Scotland, who m. Agnes Munro in 1643 and that Katharen was a 2nd wife.4 I am unaware of any substantiation to this claim.
Although there is no record of a marriage, the probate record lists his widow as Katharen. His estate was valued at £344-11-05. The inventory of his estate included a dwelling house, homelot, barn, 60 acres of woodland, 6 acres of pastureland, 8 acres of swampland and 10 acres of meadowland.

Military Service: War of 1812, 1'st Regt. (Lieut. Col. Ezra Brainerd) Connecticut Militia. August 18 - October 26, 1814. Commander, Isaac Phelps. Widow pensioned in 1879.8

Josephus Messenger, sometimes called "Cephas" was born about 1794, one of ten children born to Lemuel and Abigail Messenger. He was born and raised on his fathers farm on Old Messenger Road in West Granby .
On August 14th of 1814, at the age of about 19, Josephus was drafted into Capt. Isaac Phelps company, in the Regiment commanded by Lieut. Col. Ezra Brainard to serve in the War of 1812 where he served as a private in New London. During the time of his service the British ships were blocking the harbor, in which were the U.S. frigate "United States" and ship of [the] line "Hornet," having in charge the captured British frigate, "Macedonian". Josephus was discharged in New London on October 29, 1814.
In May of 1817, Josephus married neighbor Betsey Day. Two years later he paid Moses Godard $5 to live in his house for one year. Josephus and Betsey raised their children on Day Street, living among Betsey's family. We have records that by 1833 Josephus and Betsey had six children. Their youngest child, born in December of 1832, died three months later in March of 1833. In August of 1833, Betsey's grandmother Abigail (Woodward) Day, gifted a parcel of land to the "Children and heirs of the late Samuel Day". The following month, Josephus and Betsey sold the rights to their portion to Betsey's brother Denman Day. Five months later, in February of 1834, Josephus would die of consumption at the age of 40 leaving Betsey with at least five minor children.
Betsey remained in Granby where in 1840 she was living on Day Street next to her mother with three of her children, the older ones living and working with local farm families. In 1850 she was living with her eldest son Wilson on his farm on Barn Door Hills Road. In 1851, based on her husbands service in the War of 1812, Betsey applied for, and received, a bounty land warrant in the amount of 40 acres. By June of 1855 a large part of the family had left Granby and Betsey was now living in Marion County, Indiana where she applied for an additional land warrant. Her son Lyman and son-in-law Lewis Meyers, also now of Indiana, provide supporting affidavits. Betsey's application was approved and she was awarded an additional 120 acres.
At some point between 1860 and 1870, the family moved to Oxford, Marquette County, Wisconsin. In 1871 pensions became available for veterans of the War of 1812 and Betsey applied as the widow of Josephus. Her claim was eventually rejected as one of the qualifying requirements was that the widow must have married the soldier prior to the end of the war in 1815. Her previous applications for bounty land stated consistently that she had married Josephus in 1817. Affidavits by her sisters, Julia (Day) Graves and Anna (Day) Cadwell attesting to the marriage in 1813 rather than 1817 were unsuccessful and the pension was again denied. Eight years later, Betsey's claim was reopened and she was awarded a pension in the amount of $8 per month in April of 1879.
Except for son Frank (Rensselaer), who remained in Granby, the whole family seemed to move in a group. In 1850 Betsey was living in Granby with sons Wilson, Frank ("Ransom"), and Joseph. In 1860 she and daughter Lucy, probably a new widow, were living in Indiana. Sons Lyman and Joseph were also in Indiana while the eldest, Wilson, was in Oxford, Wisconsin. In 1870 Betsey was living with son Joseph and daughter Lucy and Lucy's son Erwin and daughter Emma in Marquette Co., Wisconsin and in 1880 Betsey and Lucy were living in Oxford, Marquette Co., with son Wilson.
Betsey died on 27 March, 1886 at the age of 89y 3m 10d (grave inscription), forty two years after the death of her husband, and was buried in the Oxford cemetery. Buried in the same plot are sons Joseph (74y 1m 9d), and Wilson (d. 6/15/1887 - aged 69y 11m 1d), daughter Lucy (66y 11m 9d), and Hannah C. (5/30/1878 -age 59ys), wife of Wilson.

Samuel Day was born in New Haven and, as a young man, moved to Granby with his mother, grandmother, and brothers at some point between 1790 and 1795. They took up residence on what would later be called Day Street and Samuel and his brother William married sisters Dorothy and Abigail Dewey, daughters of their neighbor Isaac Dewey.
On the 19'th of June, 1795, Samuel entered his cattle markings as "Ear mark is atop Cut in the off Ear & Slit in the Same & a hapney the under Side of the Same". He was made a freeman at a meeting on the 20'th of September, 1802.
Samuel stayed put and lived next to his brothers and in-laws until his death in 1818 at the age of 44. He died in debt and the job of administrator to the estate was declined by his widow and was taken by his brothers Joseph and William. Samuel's mother, Abigail Day, purchased enough land from the estate to pay off the debts.
