John Bagg married Hannah Burt, age 16, daughter of Henry Burt and Ulalia March, on 24 December 1657 in Springfield, Mass..2 He died on 5 September 1683 in Springfield, Mass..2

Immigration: before 1657, Prob. of Plymouth, England.

John Bagg is said to have emigrated from Plymouth, England. At the time of his marriage he could not have been a long resident at Springfield, since his name does not appear in the town records prior to that event. His arrival in Springfield was too late to acquire land through grants given to the early settlers. He settled on the west side of the Connecticut River which would later become West Springfield. He lived only twenty-three years after his marriage, and therefore did not have time to acquire a large estate. Records indicate that John was an industrious citizen.
In 1665 he leased 20 acres of John Pynchon at Chicopee Plain, on the west side of the Connecticut, for six years, for which he agreed to pay him twenty-three shillings a year for the first three years, and fifty shillings a year for the remainder of the time. It was agreed that at the end of the six years he could have the privilege of purchase for £18, to be paid in wheat or pork, "as pork is current at ye merchants; then the land to be his own; otherwise he is to deliver up to me the land at said tyme." It does not appear that he purchased the land; but he subsequently leased other pieces of Pynchon.
At a later time John Bagg had the misfortune to have his house burned, together with considerable corn, for it appears in the records of the County Court, held at Northampton, March 28, 1682, that Reice Bedortha brought a suit for "surrendry & Restitution of the said house, or the ful value thereof, with Just damages." The case was tried and submitted to the jury, who brought in a verdict in favor of Bagg, leaving Bedortha to pay twenty shillings as costs of court. He had previously paid ten shillings as entry fee, so that going to law did not prove to be any more profitable then than it sometimes has in later years.

Some of the land John acquired through grants and purchase in the West Springfield area include:
Grant: six acres near Cold Spring (1660/61)
Grant: twenty acres beyond Chickobee Plaine (1669)
Grant: ten acres beyond Chickobee Plaine (1672)
Grant: Seven & 1/2 acres + one ½ acres near Cold Spring (1661/62)
Purchase: Twenty acres in Chickobee Plaine (1664)
Grant: Thirty acres by Agawam River (1665)

The following is included for those interested in the laws and court system of our early ancestors:

In 1659 the General Court made playing cards a statute offense, and all who played this "unlawful game" were liable to a fine of five shillings. John Bagg was among the unfortunate number who wanted to enjoy a social, but prohibited game, and was summoned into court to answer for it. It appears that his brother-in-law, William Brooks, was the complainant.

The following account is found in "Henry Burt of Springfield" and is taken from John Pynchon's records, as follows: (with some editing)

"At a court held in Springfield, March 20, 1662, before Elizur Holyoke, Samuel Chapin and John Pynchon:

Upon ye examination of Thomas Miller, John Scot, Edward Foster, and John Bagg; also John Henryson and his wife, concerning Theire Playing at that unlawful game of Cards.

Henry Burt was born circa 1595 in Harberton, Devonshire, England.1 He was the son of Henry Burt and Isott (__?__). He married Ulalia March, daughter of Richard March and Joane Martyn, on 28 December 1619 in Dean Prior, Devonshire, England.1 He died on 30 April 1662 in Springfield, Mass..2,1

Immigration: circa 1639, of England.
Military Service: circa 1660 Member of the first Military Co., Springfield.

Henry probably emigrated to New England in the winter of 1638/9 or the spring or summer of 1639, and probably also with his wife and his seven surviving children, two children having died in England. He is found first at Roxbury, MA., where his house was burned and the General Court made a grant of £8 to the town in November 1639 because of his loss. Being interested in the efforts of his fellow-townsman, Mr. William Pynchon, to establish a settlement at Agawam (now Springfield), Henry moved there in 1640 with his family, shortly after he lost his home in Roxbury, and is one of the original proprietors of that settlement.
He immediately took an active part in all the affairs, religious and secular. He was chosen one of the first selectmen, an office he held for several years; he was a member of the divers committees to lay out and allot the lands and "for the ordering of the prudential affairs of the Plantation;" he was elected "the Clarke of the Writs," an office analogous in its duties to those of our town and county clerks. In 1650, and at other times during a vacancy in the position of minister, he conducted the religious services of the town, receiving therefore a monthly stipend of thirty shillings. It is said that his residence was on what is now Main street (1893), between Union and Wilcox. The several offices he held in town and church indicate his ability as well as the respect and esteem his fellow-townsmen entertained for him in entrusting to his management such important public affairs.

Richard March was the son of William Marche. He married Joane Martyn.1 He died before 29 April 1612 in Sherford, Devonshire, England, when he is mentioned as deceased in his father's will.1

There is little information on Richard who was dead by 1612. His children were probably born between 1595 and 1612. His widow, Joane, died between 21 May, when she signed her will, and 10 June 1616, when the inventory of her estate was taken. At the time of her death, her son, William, was dead and none of her daughters appear to have yet married. Joane was probably a sister of Rev. Henry Martyn, vicar of Rattery, co. Devon, or of his wife, Lucy Martyn.
