áááááBorn in Windsor, Isaac Phelps married there Ann Gaylord. In 1668 he applied for renewal of a grant of land in nearby Westfield Massachusetts and within a few years moved his family to the new town. In 1675 New England suffered from the outbreak of King Philip's War. Westfield was in a particularly vulnerable position and the young family must have suffered much apprehension in these times.
áááááAs one of the early founders, Isaac was very active in the affairs of Westfield. He served as the town clerk for many years and many of the early records of Westfield are in his hand. He served as a Deacon in the Westfield Church and in 1679/80 Ann, "wife of brother Phelps" is on a list of members. Among some of the offices he held in Westfield were assessor, surveyor, town treasurer, and school master. On April 9 1702, at the age of 64, it is recorded "Isaac Phelps agrees with the selectmen to keep school for one year as a scool master for the Town, and to teach to write and read such children as shall be sent to scool . . and for his satisfaction is to have twenty pounds, at or before the year expires." His services must have been considered valuable as in 1724, when 86 years old, he was chosen town treasurer.
