Immigration: before 1852, Arrived in US from Ireland, possibly immigrated in 1841 (1900 census).
Naturalized: on 15 September 1859 in Utica, Oneida Co., New York, DI date 8 Sep 1856 in NYC Naturalization Witnesses Martin Johnson and Albert B. Seymour of Westmorland.
Occupation: Farmer.

Edward and Bridget arrive in America from Ireland sometime before the birth of their eldest daughter Mary who is born circa 1852, possibly in New York City. They probably resided first in New York City where Edward files his declaration of intent to become a citizen on 8 September 1856. Our next record of Edward is his naturalization on 15 September 1859 at the Oneida Co. Court. Witnesses to his naturalization were Martin Johnson and Albert B. Seymour, both of Westmorland. Edward and Bridget could not read or write. Edward signed his naturalization papers with his mark (X).
What brought Edward and his family to Westmorland is unknown. In 1850 there is a Francis Reynolds in Westmorland. Francis was 44 in 1850, making him about 15 years older than Edward. The household of Francis consisted of himself, Bridget age 42, and Ann age 24, all born in Ireland. Also in the household were Edward age 6, Mary age 4, and Thomas age 2, all born in NY. This would date the arrival in America of Francis before 1844, possibly about 8 years before the arrival of Edward. Except for Francis and Thomas, the names of Bridget, Ann, Edward, and Mary are also names found in the family of our Edward Reynolds.
In 1860 Edward and his family are found in Westmorland and by 1870 he is farming his own land which is valued at $3,000 with a personal estate valued at $450. His household in 1870 consists of himself, his wife Bridget, and four children, Edward 16, Catherine 14, Anne 9, and Rosa 7. Missing from the family is Mary, the eldest daughter. Mary would be 18 in 1870 and her absence, whether by death, marriage, or occupation, is unknown. Mary was not listed as a survivor at her fathers' death in 1907 and It may be that she had died by 1870.
By 1875 all the children except for the youngest, 12 year old Rosa, are no longer with the family. The fate of their only son, 21 year old Edward, is unknown. However, he too is not listed as a survivor at his fathers' death in 1907 and may have died by 1875 when he would be about 21 years old. It would seem likely that he would be at home working the family farm. 24 year old Catherine, whether married yet or not, did stay in the area and married Alfred Trossett. Her descendants, for many years, operated the Catholic Book Store in downtown Utica. Anna, age 14 in 1875, is found employed as a domestic servant living in the home of H. Palmer, a physician, along with his wife Aurelia and 2 year old son Walter.

The Agricultural statistics in 1875 show that Edward owned a farm of about 53 acres with a value of about $3,750 in land and equipment. In the previous year he had planted 8 acres of oats which yielded 100 bushels, 3 acres of buckwheat which yielded 36 bushels, 7 acres of indian corn which yielded 400 bushels, 1 acre of potatoes, and had 20 apple trees. In stock he had 1 heifer and 1 milk cow and produced 100 lbs. of butter, 3 horses, 5 pigs of which he slaughtered 3, 1 sheep which produced 5 lbs. of wool, and poultry which produced $40 worth of eggs.

It is a curiosity to me as to why all the children, with the possible exception of Rosa, left the family at such an early age. Possibilities include the harsh rigors of farm life, the necessity of economics, early death or marriage, family strife, or a combination of the above. I have no information on marriages or descendants of the two oldest, Mary and Edward and they may have died by 1870 and 1875 respectively. Catherine (Kate) Trosset, Anna Roach, and Rosa Martin did marry and leave descendants in the Utica area.
About 1903, Edward and Bridget left Westmorland and moved to Utica, taking up residence in the home of their daughter, Anna Roach. Edward died the 15'th of May, 1907 at the home of his daughter and was buried in St. Agnes Cemetery. At his death it is said he is over 90 years of age, however, census records from 1860 to 1880 are fairly consistent in showing his birth in about 1821 or 1822 making his age more likely about 85 or 86. His wife Bridget outlived him by 11 years and died in 1918 at the age of 90.
While records have yet to show where in Ireland Edward and Bridget were born there are a couple of avenues left to pursue. Bridget's burial record at St. Agnes Cemetery shows her parents as Patrick and Catherine Canty. Her obituary states that she came to this country as a child. If she did indeed come to America as a child, and not as the wife of Edward Reynolds, there may be records extant regarding her parents. Also, buried next to Edward and Bridget in the Reynolds-Trossett plot is a child, Mary Reynolds, born March 17 and died October 2'nd, 1900. This infant is the daughter of Michael and Ellen Reynolds, relationship to Edward and Bridget unknown. This would certainly seem to show that there were other related Reynolds in the Utica area. Michael might possibly be a descendant of the Francis Reynolds found in Westmoreland in 1850. It may be possible that research into these other Reynolds families may yet uncover our Irish origins.

Bartholomew T. Roach was born circa 1824 in Northern Ireland, Ireland.2,3 He married Bridget Collins. He died on 17 May 1892 in Oriskany Falls, Oneida Co., New York, after being hit by a train at Abbott crossing.4 He was buried in St. Bernard's cemetery (stone), Waterville, New York.

Immigration: circa 1846, from Ireland.
Naturalized: on 16 December 1854 in Oneida Co., New York, Bart's naturalization papers were signed with his mark.
Declaration of Intent to be a citizen was filed in Oneida Co. Court on February 4, 1850. Witnesses of Bart's citizenship in 1854 were Patrick Megan and Michael Scanlin of Utica.
Religion/Church: Roman Catholic.
Occupation: Cooper.
Residence: in 1849 in 18 John St., Utica, New York.
Residence: in 1852 in Oriskany Falls, Oneida Co., New York.
Residence: in 1847 in 27 Catherine St., Utica, New York.
Residence: in 1848 in 5 Whitesboro St., Utica, New York.

Bart probably came to America from Ireland about 1846 when he was in his early to mid 20's. The first record that I find of him is a listing in the Utica City Directory when he was a boarder on Catherine St. and his occupation is listed as a cooper. In 1848 he lives on John St. and in '49 on Whitesboro St. Bart is not listed in the 1850 directory but is found in the 1850 census in Utica. Shortly after, in 1852, he is a resident of Oriskany Falls where he resided until his death in 1892.
Finding that Bart was in America at an early age opens the possibility that he may have been single when he arrived in America. His first known child is Mary Ann, born about 1851 in Oneida Co., and possibly in Utica. If Mary Ann was their first born child this might suggest a marriage date of about 1849 or '50. Given Bart's Roman Catholic faith and his residence in the vicinity of John St. There does exist a strong possibility that we might find a marriage record for Bart and Bridget at St. Johns RC Church on John St., and possibly a baptism recorded for Mary Ann who was born about 1851.
Bart filed his declaration of intent to become a citizen in Utica on February 4, 1850. On December 16, 1854, Bart was granted his citizenship which he signed with his mark. Witnesses were Patrick Meegan and Michael Scanlon.
While Mary Ann, the eldest daughter, was possibly born in Utica, their subsequent children were born in Oriskany Falls where Bart and his wife resided until Bart's death in 1892.
In 1855 Bart was a 31 year old barrel cooper and lived in a frame home valued at $500. Their residence was probably within the village. Bart's occupation as a cooper was supplemented with live-stock valued at $40.00 and included 1 cow which produced 100 lbs. of butter and 2 pigs. He and his wife could read but could not write. Bart is recorded in 1855 as being a naturalized voter. He and Bridget had three children in June of 1855, Mary Ann age 4, Edward age 2 and "Winferd" age 2 months. John would be born 3 years later in 1858, Thomas Wilbert in 1864, and Bartholomew Jr. was born in 1867. Also in the household in 1855 is a niece, Mary Ann Keenan, b.c. 1842 in Ireland. 25 year old Edward Roach and his family, along with brother Michael, 23 years old, were living next to Bart in 1855. Probably related and could be Bart's younger brothers.
In 1870 Bart's real estate is valued at $1,000. His eldest daughter, Mary Ann, and his niece Mary Ann Keenan are not listed with the family. Bart is still a cooper while his son Edward is a laborer and daughter Winifred is working in the Woolen Mill. John, age 12, is attending school and Bart Jr. , age 3, is at home. Thomas Wilbert, age 6 in 1870, is apparently missed in the 1870 census. He does show up in the household in 1865 and 1880.
Bart's eldest daughter, Mary Ann, married Patrick Downey. They resided in Syracuse where they ran a funeral home. Daughter Winifred married Louis Bleau and resided in Waterville.
Sons Edward and John would move to Utica. Edward died in 1896 of consumption leaving a son Harold who eventually resided in Ilion. John married Ann Reynolds of Westomorland and resided in Camden in the 1890's but moved to Utica about 1900 and ran a bar and hotel on John St.
Bart Jr. seems to have been a mystery. In my youth I recall the older generation speaking of Bart who went west and came back and visited Utica on occasion. I don't recall anyone claiming to have actually met him although his nephew Bart, who died in 1966, must have known him. I have in my possession [2004] a Springfield trap-door 45-70 rifle and a shot bag filled with old coins which were said to have been left at our home in Utica by Bart on his return visits, however, I have also heard these items may have been items left in the Roach & Reardon hotel on John St. which was run by Bart's brother John before prohibition. My aunt, Anne (Bankert) Carey, recalled that there was a very ornate cane left in our home in Utica which had been sent to our home from "out west" after Bart's death. In 1894 he is said to reside in Baldwinsville and is a salesman for a western hardware company. In 1898 his if of Syracuse. He may have been an adventurer and possibly served in the Indian wars, however I have not been able to find any military or census record on him. As time goes on it will probably become more difficult to unravel the mystery of Bart Jr.

At about 8.00 AM Sunday morning, May 16, 1892, while returning to his home from "up town", Bart was struck by a wild cat coal train near the coal sheds at the Abbott crossing. He was struck by the engine cow catcher and thrown about 15 feet fracturing his skull above the right ear on a railroad tie. Some pieces of skull up to two inches were removed which gave him some relief and allowed him to breathe easier but the unconscious Bartholomew died the following Tuesday.
Bart, a long time employee of H. Morgan & Co. Brewery, was noted as a respected and industrious citizen. He was buried from St. Joseph's Church in Oriskany Falls at St. Bernard's Cemetery in Waterville.
After the death of her husband, Bridget lived alternately with her daughters, Mrs. H. Downey [Mary Ann] in Syracuse and Mrs. Louis Bleau [Winifred] in Waterville. On July 4'th, 1898, Bridget suffered a "shock of paralyses", probably a stroke. Her condition deteriorated and she died on August 31'st. She was buried next to her husband from St. Bernard's Church in Waterville. At her death she left two sons, John and Bartholomew, and two daughters. Thomas Wilbert had died in 1886 and her son Edward had probably died at some point after his fathers death in 1892 and before his mother died in 1898.

Civil death records for both Bartholomew and Bridget fail to shed any light on the names of their parents or their origin other than they were both born in "Ireland".

Research Notes:
Living next to Bart and Bridget in June of 1855 is the family of 25 year old Edward Roach, and his brother, 23 year old Michael, both also coopers. Edward and Michael were probably related to Bart and could have been younger brothers. Edward, was a new resident of Oriskany Falls having resided there only 3 months. He and his 22 year old wife, Ann, were born in Ireland and had two children, Mary Ann age 1, and Michael age 8 months, both children were born in Otsego County. I have not been able to find any census records on the family of Edward before or after 1855. He may have possibly moved west.
Michael Roach did stay in the area. In 1860 he is living in Utica with his new bride, Catherine, and working as a cooper. By 1870 he is back in Oriskany Falls and living in the same vicinity as the family of Bart Roach and in 1880 lives a couple doors away from Bart and his family. Michael and Catherine had at least four children but by 1880 Catherine and one of the children had died. In 1880 he was living with his second wife, Mary McGovern, a sister of Michael McGovern. At his death in 1886, Michaels will specified his nephew, Michael Dolan, as executor. In 1887, Michael's son Thomas F. Roach was said to be of Cheyenne, Wyoming Territory. Thomas was about the same age as Bart Jr. and it's possible that the two of them may have moved west together. Mary, Michael's widow, died in 1906.
