áááááLemuel Messenger was born on 20 July 1759 (or 20 July 1762) in that part of Simsbury which is now in West Granby, Hartford Co., Conn..1 He was the son of Nathaniel Messenger and Eleanor Griffin. He married, at age 32, Abigail Lamson, age 23, daughter of Elnathan Lamson and Lucina (__?__), on 9 November 1791 in Granby, Conn., married by Judah Holcomb, Justice of the Peace.2 He died on 4 May 1839 in Granby, Conn., at age 79.2 He was buried in West Granby cemetery (stone).
ááááá
Religion/Church: First Congregational Church.
Education: Signed his name.
Military Service: DAR; Continental Line - 1979/80 under Col. Bradley in Gen. Huntington's Brigade in the 5'th Regiment Connecticut Line at Nelson's Point (across the Hudson from West Point) and at Morristown New Jersey where he saw General Washington.
Connecticut State Militia - 1777 at Stonington in Capt. David Phelps Company, Col. Noah Phelps Regiment; 1778 at Horse Neck (Greenwich) in Capt. Lemuel Bates Company, Col. Hookers Regiment; 1780/81 at Horse Neck in Capt. Benjamin Mills Company, Col. Beebe's Regiment; 1781 at New Haven under Capt. Jonathan Case.

áááááLemuel was one of nine children born into a farming family in that part of Simsbury that would later be called West Granby. As a young man he served in the American Revolution, where he saw General Washington when stationed at Morristown, New Jersey.
áááááAfter the Revolution, Lemuel remained in the West Granby area and, in 1785, was member #223 of the First Congregational Church, from which he was later excommunicated. He married Abigail Lamson in 1791, a local girl, daughter of Elnathan Lamson. Lemuel and Abigail, along with his brother Amos and his family, took up residence on the mountain west of Day Street, in West Granby. At that time, the area was an unsettled tree-covered wilderness. The brothers cleared the inhospitable land and farmed it. The land was steep, rocky and wet. They raised sheep, cattle, hay and did some lumbering.
áááááLemuel and Abigail would raise their ten children in a small home on what would come to be called Old Messenger Road. All lived to adulthood and married local people, with the exception of Lemuel Jr. who remained unmarried, and would die insane in 1844.
áááááIn 1832, Lemuel applied for a pension in consideration of over two years of military service in both the Continental Line and the State Militia during the American Revolution. The War Department allowed him a pension of $29.43 per year, acknowledging fourteen months and twenty-five days of his Continental Service, and none of his State Militia Service. For the next seven years he fought unsuccessfully for recognition of his service. The War Departments position was that Lemuel was too young to serve in some of the claimed service. The War Department later had to admit that they had Lemuel listed on their own rolls during the time they were refuting, however, they never did acknowledge additional service. In 1838, at the age of 78, Lemuel acquired the services of Elisha Phelps to act on his behalf. While Elisha was able to procure an increase to $49.52 per year in February of 1839, Lemuel never received acknowledgement for his full service during the Revolution. Lemuel would die a few months later at the age of 79. His wife, Abigail, would draw a widows pension in the amount of $49.52 per year until her death ten years later in 1849.
áááááWhen Lemuel died, he had buried two of his ten children, Josephus in 1834, and Lucretia (Messenger) Pratt, in March of 1839. When Abigail died, ten years later, she had buried two more, Lemuel in 1844 and Orvil in 1845. Sereno would die six months later in August of 1849.
áááááLemuel and his brother Amos and their descendants farmed the land on Old Messenger Road for three generations, and other families would move to the area. Once there were at least five and probably seven houses there with barns and outbuildings. There were children laughing and playing; women doing the endless chores of the 19'th century housewife; men raising sheep, harvesting crops and logging. Babies were born and people died.
áááááThe settlement was one big family; they visited together and helped each other. Wagons rumbled over the steep rocky road. Children trudged through mud or snow to school. The sounds of chickens and sheep and axes echoed on the mountain.
áááááThe first generation on the mountain had died of old age, five of Lemuels children and two of Amos would die in their thirties and forties of consumption or tuberculosis. The third generation on the mountain faired little better and what once was a thriving little community eventually disappeared. The trees reclaimed the fields, Brush concealed the cellar holes. The roads and bridges fell into disrepair. The deer came back and the sound of the wilderness returned.
áááááIt was an old road, settled over 200 years ago and thrived as a small community for a hundred years, and then disappeared. In 1899 the town voted to "discontinue Messenger Road between Parmalees and the North Granby Road near the old Elizer Rice place." A 1904 petition to repair and reopen the road was rejected. Today it is used only by loggers, hikers, and cross-country skiers.
