Immigration: in June 1634, Thomas and Alice arrived in Boston with four of their eight children aboard the "Francis", mastered by John Cutting.
Founder/Proprietor: Wethersfield, 1635; Stamford, 1640; Fairfield, 1648.
Occupation: Carpenter.

áááááThomas, at 48, his wife Alice (not Seabrook), 47, and four of their eight children sailed from Ipswich on the "Francis" on April 10, 1634, arriving in Boston in June. He removed to Wethersfield with the first settlers in 1635. In 1640, a dispute within the Wethersfield church caused many of the disaffected residents to move to the new settlement in Stamford. In that year, Thomas sold his home lot in Wethersfield to George Wyllys and accompanied the migration. By 1648, Thomas had moved his family to Fairfield and sold his holdings in Stamford. Thomas, or his wives, may have been related to Thomas Morehouse who owned land adjacent to Thomas and accompanied him in his subsequent migrations.
áááááThomas, a carpenter by trade, spent some time within the courts involved in lawsuits. In 1645 in a complaint of slander against Henry Gray, Thomas was awarded damages in the amount of £20. In a second complaint, again involving Henry Gray, Thomas was awarded £4. In an action of slander against Jehu Burr, Thomas was awarded damages of £15. The nature of the slander is not recorded, however, the amounts awarded to Thomas were quite substantial for the times.
áááááAlice, the first wife of Thomas, died by about 1639, probably in Wethersfield, leaving Thomas with eight children. Soon thereafter, Thomas married Mary who bore him six more children.
áááááThe will of Thomas Sherwood, dated 21 July 1655 and inventoried the following October, apparently names his children in order of birth. Some marriages assigned to his daughters by his first marriage seem inconsistent and care must be taken in their acceptance.

In 1653 Goodwife Knapp was tried and convicted of witchcraft and sentenced to hang in Fairfield (no witch was ever burned in New England).
áááááThe day of the condemnation, a committee, including our grandmother Mary Sherwood, visited Goodwife Knapp in the prison and pressed her to name any other witch in the town and so receive consolation from the minister for her souls welfare. She was baited and badgered, warned and threatened. The following day, in another interrogation, Mary Sherwood testified that Goodwife Knapp said "I know nothing by goodwife Staplyes, and I hope she is an honest woman." and "I apprehend goodwife Staples hath done me some wrong in her testimony, but I must not render euill for euill."
áááááTestimony shows that Mary Sherwood, among others, accompanied goodwife Knapp to the gallows. It was alleged that on the way to the gallows, goodwife Staples said "she was pswaded goodwife Knapp was no witch; goodwife Goulds sayd sister Staplyes, she is a witch, & hath confessed had had familiarity wth the Deuill."
áááááEven after death on the scaffold, the witch-hunters did not refrain from their ghoulish work but desecrated the remains of Goodwife Knapp at the grave side in their search for the witch marks. Our very own Mary Sherwood accompanied the body to the grave side where the women examined the corpse for evidence of witch marks. In regards to goodwife Staples, Mr. Ludlow testified that "she tumbled the corpes of the witch vp & downe after her death, before sundrie women". The "teates" were pulled, prodded and examined with much discussion as to whether they were the marks of the devil or marks common to many women. Eventually all the women agreed that they were indeed the marks of a witch and the body was buried.
áááááFor those of us reading these accounts today, it is difficult to understand that the woman who refused to do evil for evil and accuse another of witchcraft, and asked her accusers to pray for her, was the witch. The women who had accused, badgered and threatened her, and prodded, poked, and probed her in life and death, were the chaste and devout women of the community (For more see "The Witchcraft Delusion In Colonial, Connecticut 1647-1697" pp. 121-142).
