áááááWilliam Phelps was one of the prominent passengers on the "Mary and John" which left Plymouth harbor on March 20, 1630, and arrived at Nantasket, now Hull, on May 30, 1630. Although his birth place and parentage are unknown, there is no doubt that he was a person of some influence in England and would hold positions of substantial influence throughout his life in New England. It is noteworthy that William Phelps was referred to as "Mr." William Phelps. In those times, the term "Mr." was reserved for those with substantial political and social influence.
áááááOur first English records for William Phelps are found in Crewkerne, Somerset where the baptisms of some of his children are recorded. It appears that he first married Mary with whom he had four children before her death in August of 1626. The following November he married Ann Dover with whom he would have seven children born both in England and New England.
áááááWilliam Phelps retained positions of influence throughout his life in Connecticut. The new colony would be ruled by a governor, under the governor were the magistrates, and under the magistrates were the deputies to the court. William Phelps served many years as a magistrate and also served terms as a Deputy to the Court. In 1637 he presided over the committee which declared war on the Pequots. At times during the governors absence, he represented the governor in colonial affairs.
áááááWilliam Phelps had moved his family from Dorchester to Windsor in 1636 and had a home lot among the most prominent residents along the river. In 1639 he was among those who lost their resident to a great flood. The flooding was an annual event, however, in this year the flood commenced on March 5'th and continued by stormy wind and heavy rainfalls to the 18'th. the water was as high as ever known by the Indians. Many were drowned out and great numbers of cattle were lost. Soon after the flood Mr. Phelps removed farther north and settled south on the Highlands of what was known as Phelps meadows, on a road running east and west, and on the east side of a road running to Poquonock.

áááááGeorge Phelps of Windsor is said to have been a brother of William. While this is possible, there does not appear to be any documentation extant to give credence to this supposition.

áááááGeorge Griswold was baptized on 6 November 1574 in Wooten Wawen, Warwickshire, England.1 He was the son of Roger Griswold. He married (1) Dousabel Leigh.2 He married (2) (__?__) (__?__) circa 1616.2 He died after 1620 in England.2
ááááá

áááááGeorge Griswold was probably the youngest son of Roger. George married first, Dousabel, whose surname may be Leigh. The Wooten Wawen parish register shows that a Richard Lye and his wife, Dousabelle, had sons Richard, baptized in 1549, and Thomas, baptized in 1552. It is conjectured that one of these sons was the father of Dousabel who married George Griswold. It is also noted that Sir Thomas Leigh was an arbitrator of the land dispute of Roger Griswold. The immigrant, Edward Griswold, is the only known issue of this marriage.
áááááAbout 1616 George married an unknown wife by whom he had two more sons, Matthew and Thomas. "On Nov. 12, 1616 George Griswold purchased from Hugh Underhill and his sister Lettice with her husband, a cottage and garden at Kenilworth." This is undoubtedly a move taken upon the occasion of his second marriage. It also may indicate that his second wife had a connection to the Underhills.
áááááThis possibility is further enhanced by the recollection of Edward's son, George, in a deposition taken in May 1700 stating that as a youth he had lived with his father Edward in Kenilworth, Warwickshire, and had heard that the house they lived in belonged to Edward's brother, Matthew.
áááááIf George had settled the property upon this second wife at the time of their marriage, it would have become the property of her oldest son, Matthew, at her death. Edward, the oldest son of George, by his first wife, would not have a claim on this property. It is possible that both parents were dead by this time and Edward may have been a guardian to Matthew.
áááááEdward and Matthew would later emigrate to New England. Thomas remained in England where he married about 1644 and had at least two children.
