áááááDavid Winchell was baptized on 22 October 1643 in Windsor, Hartford Co., Conn..1 He was the son of Robert Winchell and (__?__) (__?__). He married, at age 26, Elizabeth Filley, age 19, daughter of William Filley and Margaret Cockney, on 17 November 1669 in Windsor, Hartford Co., Conn..2 He died on 29 December 1723 in Suffield, Hartford Co., Conn., at age 80.3
ááááá
Freeman: Windsor, 1671.
Public Office: Surveyor and Selectman at Suffield for 25 years, surveying 9000 acres.

áááááBorn in Windsor, David married Elizabeth Filley there in 1669. Records of a second marriage to Mary Griffin are in error and Elizabeth was the mother of all of David's children.
áááááIn July of 1666 David was sent on an expedition to Springfield. In 1673 David sold to his brother Nathaniel all of his paternal estate lying on the west side of the highway at Windsor. In the record of voluntary contributions for the relief of families distressed by King Philip's War, David Winchel stands credited for 2s 6d in 1676. From this time David disappears from the Windsor records and his subsequent history is found in the records of Suffield. He probably removed to Suffield about 1679/80 along with his brother Jonathan.

Immigration: in 1639, From Wooten Wawen, Warwickshire, England.

Public Office: Deputy to the Connecticut General Court for Windsor 1656, 1658 to 1663, and for Killingworth 1667 to 1689.
Residence: circa 17 August 1639 Edward and his wife Margaret with their four children, Francis, George, John and Sarah, along with Edward's brother Matthew came to Windsor with the congregation of Rev. Ephraim Huit.
Residence: in 1664 Removed from Windsor to Killingworth, CT.

áááááThe social status of the Griswold's of Kenilworth England is born out by the positions and respect shown to the immigrant brothers Edward and Matthew. Their leadership and responsibilities and that they were referred to as "Mr." show the esteem in which they were held in the colonies.
áááááEdward, his wife Margaret and their four children, and Edwards brother Matthew, came to Windsor about August 17, 1639, with the congregation of Rev. Ephraim Huit. Rev. Huit had been a pastor at Kenilworth Parish in England. He was censored and silenced by the bishop of Worcester for non-conformity and Puritan views which caused him to organize a company to head for New England.
áááááIn March of 1651, John Carrington and his wife, Joan, were tried for witchcraft in Hartford. One of the magistrates presiding over the proceeding was our grandfather, Henry Wolcott. Three of our grandfathers were among the jurors, Thomas Hart, William Phelps, and Edward Griswold. John Carrington, also our grandfather, and his wife, were found guilty of witchcraft and sent to the gallows.
áááááEdward was the most prominent man and the original founder of Killingworth, now Clinton, Connecticut, so named after his native Kenilworth, England. In the May session of the Assembly in 1668, Edward Griswold not only represented Killingworth, but his son Lieut. Francis was Deputy from Norwich and his brother Matthew from Lyme; as the lower house numbered only thirty-three members, a representation of three from one family was very unusual, and shows most unmistakably that the Griswold's occupied a position of high standing and great influence. Land records at the office of the Secretary of State, Hartford, show grants of 200 and 100 acres to Edward.
áááááEdward was instrumental in organizing the first church at Killingworth and was its first Deacon. He frequently served on important civil matters; his services, counsel and guidance evidently much sought. In 1678 he served on the committee to establish a Latin school at New London.
áááááSome offices held by our Griswold cousins descended from Edward include: Governors of Connecticut, Nebraska, and Nevada; Senators of Nebraska and Ohio; Congressman from New York (3), Indiana, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut.
